Research Bites: Brick by brick: revolutionising the construction industry - Prof Gabriela Medero

The construction demolition sector is the largest contributor of waste globally. Around 1/3 of waste produced in the UK comes from construction demolition, with 45% of total carbon emissions coming from construction and 32% of landfill waste coming from construction demolition. The industry is under increasing pressure to reduce waste and meet recycling targets. At Heriot-Watt we have created a brick made of 90% recycled construction demolition waste that requires 1/10 of the energy to manufacture compared to traditional bricks.
